MESEMBRIA

Denomination:  Silver DIOBOL

Date:  450-350 BC

Description: Reverse:  Crested Corinthian helmet. Obverse: "META" in Greek between four spokes of wheel.

This coin was minted in an ancient Doric settlement of Mesembria in Thrace, located on the East side, near the Black sea.

Diobol simply means two obol; a smaller denomination.

Athena was one of the most important goddesses in Greek mythology. She sprang full-grown and armored from the forehead of the god Zeus and was his favorite child. The Parthenon, in Athens, became hers as a result of her gift of the olive tree to the Athenian people.
