$253.00

Denomination: AS (Bronze)

Description:

Constantine II (Latin: Flavius Claudius Constantinus Augustus) (January/February 316 – 340CE), was Roman Emperor from 337 to 340 CE. Co-emperor alongside his brothers, his short reign saw the beginnings of conflict emerge between the sons of Constantine the Great, and his attempt to exert his perceived rights of primogeniture ended up causing his death in a failed invasion of Italy in 340 CE.
Constantine II was the son of Constantine I. He was born in Arles (which was renamed Constantia in his honor in 328 CE, explaining the CON mintmarks for Arles) and was made Caesar before he was a year old in 316 CE. Upon his father's death, Constantine II inherited the Western part of the empire, and ruled with his brothers Constantius and Constans. After quarrelling with his brother Constans, he invaded his territory, only to be killed in an ambush near Aquileia.
His coins often include "IVN" in the legend, which is an abbreviation for junior.
