Taweret (Taurt, Toeris, Taueret, The Great Female) was an ancient Egyptian goddess. She was the goddess of maternity and childbirth, protector of women and children. Combination of a crocodile, pregnant hippopotamus, and a lion. Taweret was believed to be the mother of the Egyptian children and assisted women in labor or in the protection of youth. Hippo's environment often consists of mud and so people also saw them as symbols of rebirth and rejuvenation. Amulets of Taweret were popular among expecting mothers and her picutre was often found on women's cosmetic tools, jewelry, and headrests.
