The front of the coin shows Melkarth, the local Lebanese hero, who was frequently compared to Heracles in Greek Mythology. The Eagle, on the reverse of the coin, was inherited from the Seleucid coinage of Tyre issued just prior to the city's independence.

History: The shekels of Tyre have achieved a degree of notoriety through their identification as the most likely coinage with which Judas was paid his "30 pieces of silver" for the betrayal of the Christ. They were also considered the highest content of Silver in the ancient world.
