Description: Colonial 1 real coins. During the early days of the United States—before the establishment of the mint and the creation of the dollar—the coins circulating in the country were predominately milled Spanish silver. These 8 reales were legal tender in the U.S. until 1857. This collection contains two genuine Spanish silver coins—a 1- and 2-reales—of the kind that circulated in the territory that is now the United States from 1772-1821. The obverse shows a bust of the king of Spain. On the reverse is the coat of arms, including the “pillars” that some believe were the inspiration for the dollar sign.

From 1772-1821, “bust” types like these 1- and 2-reales were struck at New World mints and used by every great figure in American history from the founding of the country until the start of the Civil War: from the heroes of the Revolutionary War, the framers of the Constitution, and the Founding Fathers of the nation to the fur trappers of the Pacific Northwest, the cowboys of the Great Plains, the steamboat captains of the Mississippi River, the plantation owners of the Old South, and the 49ers of the California gold rush; all of these great Americans used these coins.
