Nummus (Greek: νουμμίον, noummion) is a Latin term meaning "coin", but used technically for a range of copper coins issued by the Roman and Byzantine empires during Late Antiquity.
A popular Byzantine coin minted in wide varieties and by many different emperors. The letter “M” signifies how much Nummia it was worth, in this case 40 Nummia. The initials below the “M” depicted the name of the mint where it was struck. For example “con” refers to the city of Constantinople.
