Description: Judaea, AE Bronze, Shimon Bar Kokhba (133-134 CE)

Obverse: Vine leaf with Hebrew inscription: "For the freedom of Israel." The vine leaf, like a bunch of grapes, symbolizes religious ceremonies associated with the Temple.

Reverse: Seven-branched palm tree bearing two date clusters, with Hebrew inscription "Shimon."

History: The Bar Kokhba Revolt (132-136 CE) was the final Jewish uprising against Roman rule. Led by Shimon Bar Kokhba, who was believed by some---most notably Rabbi Akiva—to be the prophesied Messiah, the revolt sought to reclaim Jewish sovereignty over Jerusalem.

This particular coin features a vine leaf, symbolizing agricultural prosperity and religious rituals, and a seven-branched palm tree, possibly alluding to the Temple. The accompanying inscriptions, calling for the freedom of Israel, reflect the revolutionary spirit of the Jewish resistance. Many refer to this tree as the ‘Tree of Life’.

Despite initial success in retaking parts of Judaea, the rebellion was crushed after three years. Many Jews perished, and the Romans devastated the region, culminating in the fall of Bethar, where Bar Kokhba was killed.
