History: Before the establishment of the United States Mint and the creation of the dollar, Spanish silver coins dominated everyday commerce in North America. These milled coins, struck with modernized machinery rather than the earlier crude cob style, were widely accepted as legal tender and remained in circulation in the U.S. well into the 19th century.

The 1 Real was a widely used denomination in both local and international trade. The obverse features a bust of the Spanish king, reflecting the reigning monarch at the time of minting. The reverse displays the Spanish coat of arms, flanked by the iconic Pillars of Hercules, which many believe inspired the modern dollar sign ($).

From the Revolutionary War through the early days of the United States, Spanish colonial silver was the backbone of commerce. These coins were used by the Founding Fathers, frontiersmen, merchants, and settlers, playing a role in everyday transactions from the East Coast to the expanding western frontier. Even as the U.S. dollar emerged, Spanish silver remained in circulation until the Civil War era.
