Description: Judaea, AE Prutah, Porcius Festus (59-62 CE)

Obverse: NEP/WNO/C (Nerōn Kaisar, referring to Emperor Nero), within a wreath tied at the bottom with an X. Reverse: Palm branch, surrounded by the inscription KAICAPO and the date.

History: This prutah was issued under Porcius Festus, the Roman procurator of Judaea from 59-62 CE, during the reign of Emperor Nero (54-68 CE). Festus succeeded Antonius Felix and is mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 25-26) in connection with the Apostle Paul, who was brought before him for trial. Festus struggled with Jewish unrest and inherited a volatile province rife with conflict between pro-Roman factions and Jewish nationalists.

The palm branch depicted on the reverse was a powerful symbol in Judaean culture, often associated with victory, peace, and divine blessing. The date palm was one of the Seven Species mentioned in the Torah and was prominently featured in Temple rituals. The lulav (palm branch) is an essential element of Sukkot. In Christianity, palm branches are significant in Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
